| A collaboration between Carrie Notari and G-Rant
For many years I have been intrigued with photographing graffiti art in urban settings. I consider these found images to be public iconography - profound statements that speak of contemporary society's desires and preoccupations. By combining negatives of figures and graffiti, I seek to create embedded and fluid compositions. Beyond the dynamic interplay of figure and paint, the layered juxtapositions' meanings are sometimes disturbing, and often sublime. This body of work was exhibited at FLATFILE in Chicago as part of POLITICALLY INCORRECT in August 2002. The work was also exhibited at FLATFILE in October-November, 2003 in FOTOWERK as a multimedia 54 minute video that incorporated an original music score by G-Rant and was projected onto a sculptural installation by Cat Chow. Grant "G-Rant" Buchowicz has created a unique voice through his music for each my photographs with his brilliant interpretation of the images. Using Adobe After Effects, I assembled the 99,000+ TIFF images that transform and dissolve into one another and timed them to the soundtrack. The tension between the dynamic music and the seemingly still images creates a meditative mood and a reflective statement on visual and aural perception and the mutability of time. - Carrie Notari |
